Polling on Eve of Osaka Double Election
JAPAN POLITICS
An Asahi Shimbun telephone survey conducted on April 1 and 2 showed that 47% of Osaka city residents were against the integrated resort plan, compared to 37% who were in favor. 50% of men supported the plan, while 55% of women were opposed. Among respondents aged 18 to 29, 51% supported the casino plan, while 60% of those aged 70 or older were against it.
However, the majority of prefectural residents, both in favor and against the casino bid, said they would vote for incumbent Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura, the leader of Osaka Ishin. In the mayoral election, Hideyuki Yokoyama, who is backed by Osaka Ishin, has a slight lead over Taeko Kitano, an independent newcomer. The survey also showed that 40% of city residents and nearly 70% of prefectural residents did not disclose how they would vote.
